What is a Dental Crown?

Dental Crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that are placed over natural teeth and act as a cap to protect and strengthen the teeth. Dental crowns are adhered to the natural tooth, fully covering to the gum line, and can be used to improve and restore the shape and size of a natural tooth. We will take molds of the designated tooth and surrounding teeth so that the dental crown has a natural look and feel.  Each dental crown is custom-made for each patient so that it best fits the designated tooth and does not affect the patient’s natural bite pattern. If you choose to get a porcelain dental crown, we will color match the crown to the rest of your natural teeth so that it blends in with the rest of your smile.

What are Dental Crowns made from?

  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Porcelain
  • All-Ceramic

What are Dental Crowns installed?

Dental crowns are generally installed over the course of two dental appointments. First, X-rays may be taken of the teeth in the designated area to ensure there is no damage or decay in the roots of the tooth receiving the crown. The tooth receiving the crown and the surrounding gum tissues will be numbed so that the tooth can be filed down and reshaped to make room for the dental crown and impressions will be taken so that the dental crown can be customized to fit your mouth. Once the crown has been created, it will be fitted to the designated tooth and if the fit is correct, will be adhered.

How long do Dental Crowns last?

With proper maintenance and care, dental crowns can last for 15 to 20 years. Dental crowns are easily maintained and simply require proper oral hygiene and routine dental appointments to ensure the crown has not been damaged.
